Am I lovable?
This week I read a post in a popular social media group by a young lady who asked if Jesus would love her if he didn’t have too. She was sad that Jesus loved her just because his goodness demanded it not because she was lovable by herself!
What a mess.
Oh, what a complicated mess! My grandma would have said: “Girl, that is from the devil!” But nowadays we cannot get away with simplistic answers.
I was pondering how to answer her as I remembered John the Baptist and the way he sees himself. John himself is the product of a miracle when an angel (and not any angel but Michael himself) came down to announce his birth. He was an answer to prayer from Elisabeth and the high priest Zechariah. He was the first person in the world to recognize Jesus when he jumped in his mother’s womb!
I’m not worthy
Despite all this, John says in Mark 1: 7 “after me will come one more powerful than I am. The straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down to untie.” If you knew that in the time of Jesus only the lowest of the lowest (gentile) slave would stoop down to untie a sandal you will understand that John is claiming here to be lower than a gentile slave! He is nothing in his own understanding. And still, God called him to proclaim the gospel of repentance. He was chosen to baptize people waiting for Jesus coming.
Everything to the Lord
Although we are nothing in our own right, we are everything to the Lord. So much worth that He gave his only begotten son for us! That makes us so precious in His eyes that we can bask in his love today. Don’t let ideas, thoughts and philosophies steal your joy! Bask! Enjoy!
God choose you!
Jesus loves you.
